As much fun as it is to meet a new customer, I really love spending time with customers we’ve had for years. I got to do that last week – visiting with Craig Thayer, CTO at eCommerce provider Sazze, to award him ScaleArc’s most recent Uptime Hero Award.
I first met Craig two and a half years ago, just as Craig and his team had wrapped up yet another successful Black Friday. At the time, Sazze hosted two or three sites and had a burgeoning Black Friday app for smart phones. Fast forward to last fall, and Craig and his team delivered a zero downtime Black Friday across DealsPlus, BlackFriday.fm, Whym, Pocketly, and Progrids.
Some of the amazing stats that earned Craig our award:
- 2.5x higher traffic than Black Friday 2014
- 4 million users, vs. typical day of 400K
- 3 billion queries, of which ScaleArc cached 70%
- 80% mobile traffic vs. typical 50%
Craig commented that “It’s thanks to ScaleArc that, despite massive traffic surges this past holiday shopping season, we had no outages and no fire drills.”

Craig is our Uptime Hero winner for Q1 of 2016 – we announced the award this week to coincide with Percona Live, one of biggest MySQL trade shows of the year. Craig uses the ScaleArc database load balancing software to enable app-transparent failover and zero downtime maintenance for the company’s Percona XtraDB Cluster/Galera deployment.
